The Da Vinci Code
This book blew me away!

I'm sorry but those complaining about his "bad" prose and "unbelievable" characters are missing the whole point. First, he has firmly established the credibility of his characters. I find them to be quite credible and believable - therefore, when they do escape more than once, well, hell, so what? I don't see how this was unfounded.Second, I have researched what Mr. Brown contends in his message (yes, I believe that there is a message here) and after exhaustive research, he is not false in what his basic statements are. I highly doubt he would write such a novel full knowing that the unbelievers who are believers (eat that one) are anxiously awaiting to burn him at the stake.I commend this author for opening in me what I have been yearning for after many jaded adult years - the inner child. I should receive special privileges from Borders for buying out their paganism, Da Vinci and Dan Brown books to give as a gift, not just to myself but to my friends. I bought the Da Vinci code tonight for my dying grandfather in large print. I think it will make a great gift before he goes. As an aspiring author myself, I could only hope that I could create such an impact.

Just in: Beach reads have reached a new low

Ok, this makes me laugh. Not only is this book riddled with misinformation, and I don't care what anyone says, a novel that deals with a historical setting should at least get the facts straight and keep them clearly delineated from the fictional storyline. What is even more glaringly ridiculous is how staggeringly stupid he makes professionals who are supposed to be top in their field. One example : the notorious professor of religious symbology from Harvard University, who :1) is baffled by the backward handwriting in da Vinci's notebook ! (now remember, this is a storyline set in the present day, where da Vinci's backward handwriting is about as well known amongst art students and professionals, as is checking for email is amongst computer owners) 2) has already seen it before in a museum where he was also supposedly baffled, and now he is wondering if he is looking at semitic handwriting which it doesn't vaguely resemble ! But, Brown doesn't stop there, he has to magnify this outrageous farce, he has a British Royal Historian join in on this parody of academic pondering, he wonders if it is ANCIENT. He is 'ASTONISHED, it is like NOTHING he has ever seen!' Does he live in a shoe ? Or has he just acquired his eyesight ? No, he is simply in Dan Brown's book. Not even the genius cryptologist is spared. Although she escapes being assigned guesses bordering on imbecilic, she beams with pride at recognizing...now I hope you are sitting, because this will knock the wind out of you, BACKWARD HANDWRITING ! A cryptologist ! How absolutely, fascinating ! A cryptologist who can solve a mystery so perplexing as to confound a 12 year old for an entire New York second. That's right, I opened up the book in front of a 12 year old, saying nothing more than, "here, read this." Without a word, he got up and went to the bathroom to hold it up in front of the mirror and began reading it out loud. Now, forgive me for bragging, but I didn't even need the mirror.Obviously Mr. Brown enjoys assigning these sort of attributes to these hapless experts. He has us know that our good friend the professor of religious symbology, has trouble believing the Vatican would kill for preserving their reputation. What a novel idea ! A powerful and aggressive world power in which there might actually be people who are not entirely altruistic ! Wow, if I was a art historian who had studied, oh for maybe...uh...5 years, the intrigues of Renaissance Italy, because they are so entwined in the understanding of this key period of religious art, I know I could have easily overlooked the perhaps, 800 references to such a thing, how about you ?As if these and an additional steady stream of such bloopers are not enough, we are subjected to ignorant observations : 'da Vinci is less artistic than Faberg?' ! than 'assorted cloisson? artisans' ! Did you know that ? I didn't know that ! I still don't know that ! There's lots more 'wisdom' on this victim, be warned. Not only does he relentlessly bungle his facts and couple them with unfounded and preposterous social commentary, he has the nerve to insert this comment, about a film : "Sadly the filmmakers had gotten most of the specifics wrong..." And if the reader is not sufficiently impressed with Mr. Brown yet, they get one more clue, by including this esteemed opinion on the supposed creator of the mystery: "...he was a frighteningly clever man." Where does it end ! On page 484, directly before the blessedly blank flyleaf, where I breathe a sigh of relief of not only being done with this bestselling drivel, but that my name is not defiled by being included in the acknowledgments.

GOOD GOD YOU IDIOTS!

THIS BOOK WAS SO HORRIBLE I CALLED MY MOM UP AND ASKED HER TO SEE IF IT WAS REAL AND IF IT WAS, THAT I WAS GOING TO HIDE FOREVER. THIS BOOK IS OBVIOUSLY THE MOST OVERRATED NOVEL EVER WRITTEN. YOU PEOPLE SHOULD BE ASHAMED. I COULD'VE SPENT THE 26 DOLLARS ON SOMETHING MUCH BETTER, LIKE A MAKESHIFT CATTLE PROD. IN FACT, I RETURNED ALL 5,621 COPIES I BOUGHT AND BOUGHT SOME BACK TO BURN THEM. I AM DISGUSTED AT THIS NOVEL. YOU KNOW THAT THING ABOUT IF YOU SET MONKEYS IN A ROOM WITH TYPEWRITERS FOR A THOUSAND YEARS, THEY'D WRITE THE ENTIRE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE? WELL, THEY'D WRITE THE DA VINCI CODE IN 3 MINUTES! I MEAN, IT'S SOOO PREDICTABLE! YOU KNOW THAT JESUS ENDS UP IN FRANCE, WHICH BY THE WAY, IS A STUPID ENDING. I SPIT UPON IT! I NEED TO TAKE A BREATHER, I'M GETTING ALL WORKED UP. MAYBE SOME BADMINTON WILL CHEER ME UP. NO!! THE BOOK IS TOO HORRIBLE, EVEN FOR BADMINTON TO CHEER ME UP!! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!Q

Jesus and Mary Have a Baby? Say What?!

Yes, that is the fantastic premise of The DaVinci Code. Dan Brown very cleverly mingles fact with fiction to create a highly suspenseful thriller about a super secret society dedicated to protecting an explosive revelation about Jesus and his relationship with Mary Magdalene. But the incredible fascination over whether the premise of this work of fiction is true is very disturbing. It's just a story, folks. In the same way that the Left Behind series is nothing but a highly dubious fictionalized "prediction" of the Apocalypse, the DaVinci Code is just a fun read when your brain is tired. But don't make anything more of it than that. Please.

What's the hoopla about?

I must admit I enjoyed reading the book, one of those guilty pleasures. Sure it is mostly nonsense, a dumbed down version of Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco, but it makes for a nice beach read. Why it has become such is runaway bestseller is a mystery. Perhaps a clue can be found in some lost Da Vinci masterpiece.

The Da Vinci Code
One of the best books of 2003

While Da Vinci Code features Robert Langdon, last seen destroying the Vatican Library in Brown's Angels and Demons, reading the earlier title isn't a prerequisite to enjoying this one; Da Vinci Code stands alone. Like Browns' earlier title, this one is a page-turner that is hard to put down, full of twists and turns at a breakneck pace as the search for the Grail becomes a simultaneous flight from attack. It is also a title that can be re-read, packed with interesting trivia that bears re-examination; while it is a "fun read", full of fast-paced action, there are elements of the novel that themselves might serve as the subject of scholarly analysis; this title defines "intellectual thriller". I also read an article in Canyon News in the November issue of Star gazing, that this author has sold his book rights for a movie deal. I hope this movie is just as good as the book.

What a boring book

Dan Brown seemed to be on every bestseller list in the world so I decided to find out what was so great about his books. I read The Da Vinci Code and I surely don't know why so many people want to read this boring book. The thin plot is spread through pages and pages of copy/page like information out of "more than you ever wanted to know about ... " pamphlets. I could skip a good deal of the book and still know what happened.
A good thriller is so tightly written that one doesn't want to miss a word. Dan Brown should read Frances Fyfield to find out about good thriller writing.

The Da Vinci Code
If you've only read THIS book by Dan Brown...

Then you've gotta get the rest of his works, like "Angels and Demons", "Digital Fortress", and "Deception Point". All are equally good Dan Brown books, but, of course, "The Da Vinci Code" was definitely in a class all it's own. It deserves to stay Number One for a very, very long time. And this coming from a reader who usually buys science fiction such as "Foundation", "Ringworld", "Agents of Chaos", "Snow Crash", "Neuromancer", "Virtual Light", "Childhood's End", "Darkeye: Cyber Hunter", "Prey", and so forth. So for me to like this intriguing religious thriller means those of you who love down-to-earth drama or thrillers will definitely love this.
