How could Rawlings do it again?

Wow, wow, wow, wow. I can not belive how great this book is. I was a little suprised to see the 870 page book but now that I have read it, I wish it was 2000 page book. It is my favorite of the series. Really amazing.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3)
One of J.K. Rowlings best

With all of the hype surrounding Harry Potter, I would bet that many people will pass over these books as nothing more than a fad. That would be unfortunate. I was one of the people who bought them on a whim. I was taking a friend of mine to the Atlanta airport, when I noticed "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" on the shelf at a bookstore. Knowing that they would fly off the shelves if I didn't grab a copy (I had heard about the book on the news that evening), I bought a copy. Not only that, but I bought a copy of each of them (I'm one of those people who, in the heat of the moment, believes that if I don't get one now, I'll never be able to!)I decided I would give them to my 8 year old niece for Christmas. Now, I heard the stories about how "evil" the books were supposed to be, so I decided to read the first one - just to see. I was HOOKED.I read all the books the week I bought them. I gave my niece a card and $20.00 for Christmas.Sure, these books may be the epitome of mass market publication. And you might get sick of seeing Harry Potter everywhere. But when it comes down to it, the books are good. Ignore the trinkets, the bookends, posters, glasses, stuffed animals and all the hype. Buy the books. take it from this 30+ year old kid - they are every bit as enjoyable as they are made out to be.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1)
excellent beginning story

Anticipating the release of Book 4 this coming Saturday, I have spent the last four days reading the entire Harry Potter series for the first time. Does it live up to the hype? Well, I will just say it is a lot of fun and has made me lose sleep finishing each book. It is worth mentioning that I am 23 years old.At this point, this book is my favorite of the three, because I found it the most tightly plotted and ultimately satisfying. None of these books are particularly original. Why is the series so popular then? A large part of it, I think, is its appeal to both children and adults. It draws its influences from authors like Roald Dahl (a favorite of mine as a kid), but is in many ways more sophisticated, if not quite as creative. The characters are well-drawn, and despite the apparent black-and-white morality, which is a staple of children's literature, things are not always as obvious as they might seem upon first glance. The heroes aren't perfect, and in terms of the story's villains, there is at least a delineation between those who are evil and those who are simply not that nice.My favorite part of this book is when Harry receives the "letters from nowhere," leading up to the part where Hagrid bursts in and confronts Harry's aunt and uncle. It is a delicious and funny scene, and I think Hagrid is a wonderful character. He is an oafish giant who is not that bright, but nearly impossible not to like. I also am fond of Hermione (how in the world do you pronounce that name?), an uptight, perfectionistic girl who is actually very plausible.Another delightful thing about the series is the way the concepts it introduces stick in one's mind. After reading the series, I can easily explain the rules of the made-up sport Quidditch, and I can also tell you the differences between Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. It helps that the names tend to sound like the concepts they represent. I doubt I would care, though, if the story wasn't engaging and gripping. The surprises in the later books seem to mesh perfectly with everything from the first book, and I seriously doubt Rowling is making up the story as she goes. That explains why the world she creates is so consistent. Traditionally, we tend to think of magic and sorcery in connection with primitive societies, but in these books the magical world is the advanced civilization, whereas our "Muggle" world is what is primitive. That is a very interesting take on the genre.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)
I thought it couldn't get any better than book 3

I bought the book the day it came out, and I finished it that day. That's how good it was. All 734 pages kept me on the edge of my seat, and I CAN'T wait for the next one! Please write fast Ms. Rowling!

Potter Review

Okay, so I realize that it's a book for every year Harry is at Hogwarts, but it would have been nice if this one could have been split into two - it's just too long.Don't get me wrong, it's still a very good book, but I just don't see myself rushing to pick it up again any time soon, which I do frequently with the other 3 in the series. And that's really why this is only 4 stars instead of 5.Ignoring the length, how is the book? Very good: the characters all grow, their relationships become more complex, and the world they live in becomes darker and deeper, just as it does in real life. We get a better look at the global world of wizards and witches (although some of the accents are a little ridiculous) and there is a more palpable sense of evil in this book. Are there any complaints? Sure, but there's always going to be a few. JK Rowling seems to be pandering to new readers by explaining previous events ad nauseum, which means that there's little point in buying the previous novels if you read Goblet of Fire first. And the death that was so well hyped...well, no spoilers, but I imagine there will be a few shrugs from adults as to the victim. To finish, it's a great read (maybe not 12am to 6:15am great, but that's my fault!) that would have benefited from tighter story telling. And if that's the only complaint, then it's worth your time and money.
