Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1)
UNDENIABLY EXTRAORDINARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are reading this review..then you too must be interested in the hype behind Harry Potter. The buzz has been tickling my ears for a long time. I gave in. I went and saw the movie "Harry Potter and the Scorcerer's Stone".. Okay..I have seen the movie and then read the book.....And I must say..the movie IS better than the book, but ONLY because of it's marvelous visual display..you'll love it. I read the book following my thrill at the movie and fell in love with the story once more. Harry Potter...an ordinary boy about to live an extraordinary life. Imagine being orphaned to your dreadful aunt and uncle who care nothing for you and tell you nothing about yourself. Harry Potter was told his parents were killed in a car crash and since has lived a most dreadful life in the cupboard under the stairs in the house of the Dursley's: his Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and their obnoxious son, Dudley. Harry's life, well, it[...]to put it plainly. They treat him like a servent...Until one fine day........Letters start arriving. Hundreds. They are flooding in the Dursley home. Harry, however is forbidden to read one even though they are addressed to "Mr. H.Potter, The Cupboard Under The Stairs". On Harry's Eleventh Birthday he is finally greeted by a giant named Hagrid who is appalled that the Dursley's never explained Harry's letters or his past to him...Harry Potter is a WIZARD! His parents who died trying to save him from an evil wizard were famous and so is Harry because he survived! Hagrid tells Harry he is from "Hogwarts" a fine school of witchcraft and wizardry and that Harry is invited to join, just like his parents before him. What happens next once Harry finds his place at school is a jumble of schoolwork, magic, mystery, scary secrets and some unyeilding professors. If you want to know about Quidditch, Peeves, and the Fat lady...you'll have to immerse yourself into Harry Potter's world..it does not dissapoint. It's an easy read for young adults and yes many adults have found it charming as well. What can I say? This could be the book and movie series of the decade..

Can't let last review stand

While our young people certainly should be aware that success in this life (and the next) can not be obtained through magic, I am a Christian who strongly believes these are great books. They are well written, imaginative, and allow us to escape the everyday in a safe, enjoyable setting. I found no occult overtones (or even undertones). Evil is portrayed as evil, not something one would aspire to, but rather, those who "will do anything to get what they want." Although those on the "good" side use magic, they also use their brains. They learn one must have knowledge to improve oneself and conquer evil. If, perhaps, my 7 year old wished he could use magic in his own life, it would be an excellent time to discuss our beliefs about helping others and how best to attain salvation. DO NOT miss these books because you've heard they're "bad." My only complaint was in wondering why Harry does what he does; one can tell these are the writer's first attempt. No harm, though, they are still wonderful. It doesn't matter how old you are, read them, and enjoy them.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone

I have had this book on the shelf to read for a while and finally picked it up and read it. Let me say from the minute I picked it up I didn't want to put it down. It was truely a book for all ages, and thoroughly well written.I can't wait to read the rest of the series, I am hooked now and there is no stopping me. I can't wait to have children to read these stories to.

Looking for God in Harry Potter
I Vote FIVE Stars (even though it says 4)

This book went way beyond my expectations and was incredibly helpful. When my fifth grader wanted to read the first Harry Potter book years ago, I borrowed one from the library to preview it and was immediately addicted. I let my son read it, but always had a niggling fear that I might be encouraging an interest in magic, witchcraft, or the occult. Mr. Granger has put my fears to rest with his brilliant analysis of what is truly behind these stories. I always knew that Ms. Rowling was a genius storyteller, but now I can appreciate the depth of her intelligence, thanks to John Granger's. For everyone who wants to love Harry Potter but was afraid to, read this and be at peace! (Somehow I accidently clicked on 4 stars, FIVE is my vote)

Magic and fantasy have never been better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The highest reading level of this book was 12. Well, guess what. I'm 15 and I've already read it about three times all the way through. The first night I got it I stayed up all night long finishing it. I just couldn't put the book down!!!! This was an amazing debut book for Ms. Rowlings. Her plot was fasanating, her descriptions were great, and her characters were the funniest. I REALLY liked all their names, like Dumbledore and Hagrid. And the Weasley twins were hilarious. Oh, yeah, and I would love to be on Hogwort's ball team. Flying through the air on a broom like that sounds like alot of fun, as long as you don't fall off. I definately can't wait to the sequel!!!!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
It was here, and now it is gone...

I waited a long time for a book that took me all of four days to read, so now I am back to waiting again. Feels sorta like S. King's Dark Tower series. Plenty of folks will go on and on about the book's finer points and the books not so fine points. I could do the same, but why bother? If you are a Harry Potter fan, you will read this book. If not, this is not the ideal starting point. The book is long, the book is good, the book is dark. The feel good moments in this novel are scarcely there, if there at all. I think that JK Rowling has stopped focusing on the younger folks with her writing and has realized that she can really strike a cord with the older crowd who have already been through what our young hero is experiencing. If the book were a movie, it would be a definite PG-13 for all but the most mature kids who are reading out there. That said, the fifteen year old angst that Rowling captures is quite powerful and moving. Some characters develop quite nicely, while others move in somewhat unexpected directions(that is a good thing, people). My only real gripe is that the death of an important character was handled rather badly. It didn't get the build up it deserved; however, it leaves room for much Harry development in the future. I know some have complained about the length, but I hope the following two editions maintain the 800 page range. Longer would be too much, but when waiting three years between publications, anything else is too little.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
The best ever! Emotional and prophetic.

A long two year wait finally ended!! The negative impact for writing a very good book is that each new work is compared with the best among the previous ones. So where does Order of Phoenix stand among other harry potter books? In my humble opinion, its not as gripping as Prizoner of Azkaban, but still a shade better than at least two of the others. Ms. Rowling has that superb style of storytelling, that makes you keep turning the pages till you reach the end. The plot was interesting enough for me to take a half day leave from my office. The priorities will be reset for any avid harry potter fan. Mysterious, scary and spellbounding from the very first page, OOP certainly stands up to the global hoopla it created before its release. But, while the first previous four were quiet independent (remember even quidditch has been described in detail in at least three of them), Ms Rowling is not so liberal with the first timers in HP-5. After all she gave us two full years to know in all details the phenomenon that is Harry Potter. If you plan to join the harry potter bandwagon (have you not done so yet) with OOP then its not a very bright idea. But make sure that you finish this one before the sixth one is released. In fact OOP makes us want even more of Harry Potter and talk has already been started about possible release date of HP-6. (Is it called HP and Green Flame Torch?).
The 870 page book has Harry coming off age. Harry has to suffer the double attacks of voldermolt and the ministry of magic. In fact, in large parts of the book, the ministry is the villain and both professor Dumbledore and Harry Potter are made to work out ways to tackle them instead of Lord Voldermolt. Nobody in the wizarding world wants to beleive that You-know-who is back in full power and ready to unleash the terror. Further insights has been given into many old characters and several new characters, like Luna Lovegood, Proffessor Umbridge, Bertha, Grawp et. al. play a very significant role. There are answers to the questions left in the previous books, viz. Why does Voldermolt wanted to kill Harry just after his birth, Why some wizards/witches turn into ghosts after they die, Where was Sirius hiding all this time, and many others. But OOP leaves more questions than answers, and the most important of them will be What Next? That makes you even more desperate for the next release. Whatever said, the OWLs (ordinary wizarding level exams for fifth yearites), the new joke shop of fred and George (that they started with Harry's triwizard winnings), the ruddy attitude of the ministry of magic, the new DADA teacher, the prophecy, the radical change in the Gryffindor quidditch lineup, new places like the St. Mungo's Hospital and ministry of magic (where a significant part of the action takes place) coupled with the brilliant style of Ms. Rowling makes Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix an amazing read.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
By Far The Best Book In The Series

It was really difficult for me to get through the first seven chapters...wait, did I say seven? Harry really surprised me when he turned out sniveling, whiney and just plain annoying throughout most of the book (although he does get better towards the end). He obviously does not understand the concepts of accepting responsibility, humility or even loyalty. The writing is superb, as always, and definitely an easy read. I was on the edge of my seat for alot of the book, but I was incredibly disappointed in Harry. (Plus at Ron and Herminone too for not giving him a huge sock when he most deservedly needed one!)As a whole, I really enjoyed the book and explained away Harry's arrogance and attitude as teenage angst/puberty. Hopefully he becomes a man and grows up a bit in the next two books.

I love it.

It was really fun. I couldn't stop reading once I started. Today I bought the Japanese translation, which published this December, for my youngest 10-year-old daughter but before she started to read it, her 17-year-old sister took the book and almost finished it. I enjoyed the description of the various wizard sweets and the Christmas dinner at Hogwarts as well as the story. I wish I had been at the table at Hogwarts. I can't wait to read her next story.
