Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
Not as good as espected but liked it anyway

Harry Potter's 5th book was a long awaited event for most of all his fans, but this book was... well.. not as good as espected. I won't say it hasn't anything going for it, as a matter of fact, I read it in one week. It's long though, but you keep glued to it. The new characters that Rowling introduces to us in this book are some what lame, except for Dolores Umbridge, a really nauseating and horrible person, who at some times, you even want to get inside Hogwarts and jinx her BAD! The writing style is a little weary, some times it goes on too long with out any excitement and it seems a bit dull, but some times it has too much excitement, I think that a mid point would've been better. Overall it's a good book, but some of it's highlignts (like the personality of Cho and her realtionship with Harry, the rude attitudes of Harry, and the uneventful death at the end) leave the reader much to be desired, I think that Rowling could've done better. Well... let's hope that the folowing books get better, 'cause the way the stroy is unfolding, I think that she has a lot of future material to write about, let's hope it doesn't turn out as average as this one. It's a good book, read it, you'll enjoy it, but don't espect too much. I still liked the other four books better. Anyway... at the end you keep wondering (as in all previous books) how are things going to turn out next, as now everyone in the wisarding world knows that Voldemort's back and strong as ever. Well I think we'll have to wait for book six and see...

Burning Cups of Fire

I've always loved to read books. I'm an 18 year old male and when I first picked up Harry Potter I was a bit sceptical about it but after the first 50 pages of Harry Potter 1 I was a regular Harry Potter fan. I read all the Harry Potter books back-to-back and I even got my girlfriend hooked up on them and she hadn't touched a book in years. This book is wonderfully written and contains a great story written in a way that can be funny, scary, exciting as well as depressing. J.K. Rowling understand, like few other writers, how to deal with a childs mind and does this in such a way that even grown ups will love this book.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1)
Where was this book when I was a kid? :)

I'm a good dozen years or so above the target audience, and my tastes run more to serious diplomatic and military history than fantasy, and I've been known to read Dostoyevsky for fun. Nevertheless, more out of curiosity than anything else, I bought HP and the Sorcerer's Stone and started reading it. To my surprise, I was absolutely entranced. I won't bother with a description of Hogwarts, the Dursleys, the Weasleys, Hermione, or even Quidditch. Once I started reading, I didn't want to put the book down, and finished it in a matter of hours. Not since Orson Scott Card's "Enders Game" when I was about 10 had another book captivated me so much. I'm currently working my way through the other books, anticipating Harry's next adventure and hoping this magical series doesn't turn into a forum for the exposition of Rowling's religious beliefs the way the Ender books, Narnia, and the Dune series became the way Card, Lewis, and Herbert did it.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)
Better than i expected

I wrote quite a bad review of the 5th book but finished saying that I hoped J K Rowling hadn't completely lost her touch, and I think this book shows she hasn't.

I liked it because Harry and his friends finally seem to be growing up a bit (especially after how annoying they were in the last book) although they're still not completely there yet, and there are also loads more interesting things we've never come across before (like Felix Felicis and Horcruxes- although I won't explain about them) as well as characters ( Horace Slughorn mainly I suppose, Greyback too though he only appears briefly) there are also some exciting events (as in all the books) and of course the fact that we learn so much more about all the characters and events previously, setting us up for the final book and battle.

However, I don't think it's better than the 3rd (my favourite by far) and I do think it could have been shorter, this isn't a problem for me but I'm not sure that younger children will want to battle all the way through it (though I think if they managed to keep going through the 5th they'll manage this one). The romance is nice, but can be a little slushy and I'd imagine that fierce adventure fans (or people who don't like romance) would feel that these parts dragged the story down.

This book is also a lot darker than the previous and although I liked this it may be an idea for parents reading with their children to read it first so they can be prepared for some more difficult areas (such as inferi (zombies) and a werewolf that practically likes to attack kids, and of course the death aspect)

But despite its problems I did really like it and think that most Potter fans will feel the same.

Bring on the next book!

Title: Looking for God in Harry Potter

Looking for God in Harry Potter
Captivating perspective - a must for fans of all persuasions

Granger has refined and sharpened his already-potent message of how these phenomenally successful books have such broad appeal and why they deserve to be taken seriously as literature from his first book on the subject (Hidden Key to Harry Potter, 2003). Granger's base message is that love conquers death, a fundamental principle of Christian thinking ... but it is a message that has resonance for others as well. Granger shows compellingly how Harry is resurrected from the dead via sacrificial love and/or a clear Christian symbol in each of the 5 books. Accordingly, I thought his writing was at his strongest in Chapter 7, titled "The Triumph of Love Over Death." I always enjoy hearing (or reading) Granger's explanation of the alchemical imagery and structure in the Harry Potter novels. Once the reader understands the basics of alchemy and its uses in great literature, it is possible to appreciate the rich layers in these novels so much more. I think that appreciation of the alchemical structure and symbolism, following a grand tradition in British literature in particular, is fundamental to really understanding these books, and this is an area of analysis of Rowling's work not previously touched on by many (or any?) scholars. The chapters in Granger's book relating to the symbolism replete in the Harry Potter novels, as well as the name meanings, are also a joy to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book-by-book analysis, which is perhaps an excellent starting point for Christians who are skeptical or even hostile to Rowling's novels. Granger's analysis of each of these books is so compelling that it should foster questions and reflective thought in even the staunchest of critics. I now also have a greater understanding of why I favor the 3rd and 5th novels in the series so much (the 1st, 3rd and 5th novels being more introspective, while the 2nd and 4th novels are more focused on the greater world around Harry).I think this is easily one of the greatest commentaries on the work of J.K. Rowling. As one promotional reviewer noted, it will make Christians who love the books appreciate them all the more, and it will give Christian critics much to consider. But, I want to emphasize that this isn't just a book for Christians; Granger's fundamental thesis and his explanations of alchemy and doppelgangers should have appeal to all Harry Potters fans, regardless of religious persuasion. I heartily recommend this book to all the Potterphiles out there!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
Just finished the entire series - very overrated

I decided to read the Rowling books because I had heard so many great things about them, but I have to say this is about the most disappointing reading experience I have had in a long, long time.I suspect if I hadn't heard so many good things about the books, I might have enjoyed them a lot more. I was expecting something that was akin to a great classic, like ALICE AND WONDERLAND or THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE, but while it was OK, it was a masterpiece.Well, let me say one positive thing. J. K. Rowling has obviously not been content to rest on her laurels or sales. She obviously has expended an enormous amount of effort into making each book better than the previous one, and I respect her for that. But it still doesn't make me rate these among the best children's books ever written.

I loved this book because it was exciting.

I heard about the Harry Potter series on the morning news. I love to read and thought I would give it a try. I am glad that I did. I could not put the book down and I am 25 years old. The characters and the plot pull even the most seasoned reader in to a read full of fun. There a renewed wonderment at life as one reads. This is a happy book with wonderous suspense. It is a great change from the average book offered to the adult reading market. I highly recommend and am going to keep on reading this series. Kudos to the author.
