Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)
undoubtedly the darkest of the series

It seems every Harry Potter book in the series gets better and more layered. More twists in this one and the syntax is brilliant. A very smooth, flowing book that makes for great reading whenever. But you gotta start with Book 1 ...

Best thing since The Phantom Tollbooth

Fantastico! This scrumptious novel carried a certain "charm" to it that made it impossible to put down! I am an 8th grader and my high school brothers and I had quite an argument on who would get to read it first, and an all-important "paper-rock-scissors" tournament was initiated. I won! Although there was a lack of the sport "Quiditch", the book was easily as good as the first three, if not better. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in my hammock and slowly absorbing the magic of this book, in spite of my brother's naggings to "read it faster!"

Magical

So much has been written about this wonderful book and its sequels, but I really must add that not only should author Rowling be feted for creating books that kids really want to read, book after marvelous book, adults who avoid them are also missing a lot. While never wavering from her entirely readable prose, the author flawlessly interweaves endless references, allusions, and myriad other techniques and devices which move her work from the merely grand books for the `tweenage to something considerably more literate and "critically sound," in its most erudite and arrogant connotation. Plot. Character. Incredible settings. It's all there, but thankfully, blessedly, there's so much more. Authors like Rowling and the wickedly wondrous Lemony Snicket are raising the standard for quality children's literature to where it should always have been, identical to that of any great writing.

I Read This One Without the Dust Jacket, Too

I'd already given in to the hype that came along with Book #4 and ponied up the money to buy all four volumes. After surreptitiously devouring #1, I got into the swing of the storyline and decided to read the entire set. Don't get your hopes up -- this isn't "deep" reading -- but it IS fun reading. You'll find yourself trying to outguess the mysteries -- and you can probably DO it -- but the point is that the author brings you along and makes you enjoy the story as you pretend that it is too "simple" for adults to read. But, give in -- even if you have to pull off the dustjacket and pretend you're reading something from the "nonfiction" shelf. You'll find yourself smiling and then looking for the 3rd volume.

Magical Fun !

I waited about six months before I chose to plunge into the second book in the Harry Potter series. I just had too many other books to read on my list. Anyway, I'm glad I decided to read this one. The one thing about Harry Potter is that you (the reader) escape to a fantasy world filled with magical fun. I love how the books end with key morals to the story, too. There are definite messages that we must live by. The last 4 or 5 chapters in this sequel really keep one on edge for 'what happens next'! I understand HP & The Sorcerers' Stone (Philosophers' Stone), the movie, is released on Nov. 19, 2001 here in the U.S. Warner Brothers quickly starts filming the sequel (Chamber of Secrets) in Nov. 2001 for fear of the stars getting older--haha. I can't wait to see the movie...from the character still photos I saw in the Vanity Fair Oct. 2001 issue it will be Magical Fun...and relatively close to the book storyline so we (Potter Reading Fans) shouldn't be too disappointed.

harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban

This book was much better than book two, so don't get discouraged and quit the series. There are a lot of plot lines in this book as well, so it's a little more cerebral. Ron is still my favorite character especially when he talks about Scabbers. These books are fantastic and I can't wait until my kids are old enough for me to read the books to them too.

Totally out of place

If she would have added a shrunken head I wouldn't have been surprised. The book fits with the other 5 about as well as the POA movie fits with the first two films, very badly.

Less humor, more foreboding

Wow, finishing this book only an hour ago, I have to say that the days of Lockhart and other wild antics seem to be long gone. Everything, including Dobby and Hagrid has turned much darker and more foreboding. I love the Harry Potter series, but I wish this book had more lighter moments to balance out the ominous tone in this book.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)
Not a "feel-good" book

Usually when you wait with bated breath for a much-desired book, there is a chance that it will let you down. Definitely not so with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Though not as upbeat as the other books, with the looming prospect of OWL's and Lord Voldemort's undeniable return, this book explores Harry's character more thoroughly. In addition to exploring Harry more, the Rowling introduces a few new characters--Tonks, Mundungus, and the deeply hated Umbridge are just a few. Many have heard that Dumbledore explains many things to Harry (this is correct)--but he not only explains things, but he also shows his greatest weaknesses in this book. Rowling's writing becomes more and more descriptive and vivid as the book continues on and it is drawn quickly to a startling climax. In fact, I didn't even expect a climax because so many things happen, but the inevitable climax shows up and shocked me (nearly to tears). I got the book on saturday night and had finished it by monday night (lacking very much spare time for reading, so it's a pretty quick read). I'm going to leave it at this for fear of giving too much away; Rowling has proved her skill at authorship by bestowing us with yet another installment of this fantastical series that shows her incredible gift. The depth and beauty of this book couldn't be described in 1,000 words--it wouldn't be enough. I commend her awesome writing and look forward to the next two installments and for some more (possibly different) writing from her. Savor this book people--it has to last us until the sixth!
With Admiration, a 15 year old reader
