The Making of the Movie Trilogy (The Lord of the Rings)
A concise and yet comprehensive look at the Movie Trilogy

The chapter where you become truly amazed at how Brian Sibley can make every single aspect of the production of "The Lord of the Rings" fascinating is Chapter 8: Hobbit Hair and Wizards Whiskers. That is because he talks not only about how Peter Owen and Peter King created the hair and makeup for Gandalf's beard and Galadriel's golden tresses, but also because he explains the need to making bucket loads of mud (short version: you need "sterilized" dirt). Then there is the sidebar that explains director Peter Jackson got the sound of several thousand Uruh-hai chanting Black Speech as they march to Helm's Deep in "The Two Towers" by going to a New Zealand versus England cricket match (admit it, you were expecting it to be soccer or at least Australian rules football). Once you have that reached that level of insight you know that you are getting a truly comprehensive look at "The Making of the Movie Trilogy."Sibley covers everything from model making to creating the one ring to rule them all, so ultimately it is just a question of what parts you like best. Obviously, anything have to do with ?owyn, the White Lady of Rohan is going to appeal to me, so I liked the look at her costumes. But I also really enjoyed the Epilogue: An End and a Beginning, that has to do with the world premier party for "The Fellowship on the Ring" in New Zealand. I liked the poster of New Zealand customs desks reworked with signs indicating lines for Orcs, Trolls, Journalists, and hobbits and the set of commemorative stamps and special first-day cover. Sibley wrote "The Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide," so he obviously knows the territory, but what impressed me most is that while explaining how the magic is made he manages to be both comprehensive and concise. After all, he could have put together something as long as the Trilogy itself in detailing the process of adapting it for the screen. Fans of the movie trilogy will find this a worthy companion volume.

The Lord of the Rings (Leatherette Collector's Edition)
The Lord of the Rings is the definitive work of fantasy

When I say "definitve," I am referring to the authoritative nature of this work. It brought the genre of fantasy into the mainstream and because of its depth, clarity, and Tolkien's keen sense of language and detail it remains the standard bearer for fantasy today. The plot of the Lord of the Rings is too large to allow much comment here. In short, the Lord of the Rings is the story of a hobbit named Frodo who undertakes a seemingly impossible mission to destroy a ring of unspeakable power and evil. If you are not a fan of the fantasy genre, this may seem too "fairy-tale-ish" to be taken seriously. However, while the setting and characters are in many ways fantastical (it is fantasy after all!), the themes found in the book are universal and timeless. Good versus evil. Fear versus courage. This story is trully "epic." I would suggest this book to any newcomer not only as a introduction to the fantasy genre but as work of literature as well. Tolkien's style is lucid. The characters are intriguing, not neccessarily because of their strengths but often because of their flaws. One of the only criticisms of Tolkien is that the characters and story are often aloof. While this is true, it was most likely the intention of the author to infuse an epic quality to the work. Now, for some notes on editions. For those who want to keep expenses to a minimum, the 1999 paperback edition ... is a good choice. For those Tolkien enthusiasts looking for a more durable edition, the millineum edition leaves a lot to be desired because of the binding and type face. I have come to treasure my red leather bound collector's edition. The binding has held up superbly though the fold out map is a bit cumbersome.

The Lord of the Rings (BBC Dramatization)
Fantastic

This CD set is fantastic. For qualifications, I have read the trilogy seven times (just started my eighth) over many years. I have listened to nearly every radio play, seen nearly every movie and watched many professional local plays related to it. This BBC production is certainly one of the best.If you like the recent Peter Jackson movie renditions of the trilogy, you will probably like this set as well. They are very similar. This set is more accurate, but it is somewhat understandable that the movie takes more literary license.Yes, like the movie, there are some things taken out (Tom Bombadil, for example). However, this should not be surprising. The unabridged audio version of the trilogy runs something like 55 hours. This set is less than 13 hours - less than 24% of the length! The movies are something like 9 hours, but the visual aspect helps fill in a lot of the details. Although the audio version allows some filling in, too, it obviously does it less so. There are some sound effects that may go unnoticed unless you know the story. This does not detract from the story, but encourages reading it again. One drawback is the dynamic range. Usually, a wide dynamic range like this recording is a good thing. However, when I am driving and listening, I often found myself adjusting the volume so that it was not too quiet or too loud. Sometimes this was a nuisance, but the quality of the audio more than made up for this "deficiency".Another drawback was the number of tracks and their length. Some of them ranged from 2 minutes to 23 minutes averaging 6 tracks per CD. With it being so easy for a CD to have as many tracks as desired (although 20 is a comfortable maximum because of the displays on some CD players), there was no need for some of the tracks to be so short or so long. This was especially noticeable when the track would shift in the middle of a session or a track would have three or four sessions in one track. The main reason this was a nuisance for me was on my portable CD player. When I turn it off, it does not remember where it stopped (it does remember the track, but some other players do not). So, I would have to remember where I stopped and then fast-forward or rewind for up to 12 minutes. The production itself is excellent. The voices are clear, well articulated and expressive. Each character sounds nearly as well as I imagine they would -- they bring life to the sound waves. The sound editing is excellent. The instrumental music is sparse, but very good. The vocal music ranges from good to excellent and is mostly located at three-quarters of the set and the last CD or so.One test for me is whether the ending makes me cry! Now, I rarely cry at movies, plays, reading books or listening to them. In fact, only three movies have made me really cry ("Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan", "Dances with Wolves" and "Beaches") and two books (one of the Sugar Creek Gang books and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy). When my wife and I read the trilogy outloud together, the last paragraphs took ten to fifteen minutes to complete. This audio set is the same. It is so moving that it is very difficult to keep a stiff upper lip. Like Frodo, I failed. But all's well that ends better!

Conlins thoughts

The Fellowship of The Ring
by. J.R.R. Tolkien
The reason I chose this book to read is because, I saw the movie. I wanted to see how the book was different from the movie. I thought that the book was a lot better because, in the movie they left out a lot of important facts. But, I thought that they were both realy good, and I am going to read and watch the next book and movie. It is called the "The Twin Towers". I hope that it will be as good as "The Fellowship of The Ring."

The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, Book 3)
How depressing.

This book would have been so much more interesting if Sauron had just gotten his ring. Those hobbits and elves were just annoying. My mind kept screaming for them to die, but they never did.Tolkein is the most depressing autor ive ever read. Every character he makes me fall in love with he has killed by every character he makes me hate. Sauron, Sarumon, Durins-Bane (the Bolrog), The Witch King, and not to mention all the Orcs. I remember crying after the Hobbit because Smaug and all the Orcs died in the last battle. One of my biggest complants about this book was how he portrayed the battles. He spent a good twenty pages describing the all mighty power of the Witch king, and then had him die in five seconds at the hand of a woman. That, and his descriptions of the battle was very generalized. He basicaly said, that the good guys won and that the Evil was very strong. It would have been so great if Sauron could have gotten the Ring and taken over middle Earth, the story would have been much more interesting. The hobbits were just annoying.Tolkein's book had so much potential, sure its a classic and will be popular even another 50 years from now. But it will never be as great as it could have been.

The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, Book 3)
The Lord of the Rings - Greatest Fantasy novels ever!

"The Return of the King" is the final volume of Tolkien's masterpiece, "The Lord of the Rings". There is nothing else that has ever come close to comparing to it - although many have tried. "The Return of the King" is a wonderful conclusion to Tolkien's fantasy. The finale by itself is well worth reading over and over again. Unless you have been completely spoiled by modern interpretations of fantasy, "The Lord of the Rings" should be in your permanent library. Be sure to read the first volume =before= the new movie comes out, as I have heard that they changed many events, and left out others in the interest of brevity. Every fan of fantasy should read "The Lord of the Rings" at least once in their lives. My very highest recommendation for any fantasy book.
