Title: The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1)
Publisher: Recorded Books
Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien
Rating: 3/5
I really like fantasy novels... Neil Gaiman rocks my world... so i tried to read Fellowship of the Rings. Whereas, i will say that the language is beautiful, and the characters are charming, and the plot interesting... it can be considered long-winded. This book is fun, but don't expect it to be light reading to whiz through. They spend 80 pages walking down the same road - it's almost as though the book is written in real time. I wanted to say, "Frodo... Are we there yet?"I do recommend this book... it is wonderful... but only if you have the time and patience to get through it.

If you've never smelled cinnamon rolls on a frosty morning or have never lain in bed on the sleeping porch inhaling the perfume of night-blooming jasmine or if you've never read The Hobbit then you do not know the majesty of imagination.Do not be fooled! Though ostensibly a children's book there is a veil of darkness about it that only adults or precocious children can appreciate. Tolkien himself admitted adding the trappings of a child's fantasy to what was a basically dark and forboding story for fear of being laughed at for producing an adult fantasy. The Hobbit is a sweet, dark, and intoxicating work of fantasy that enrobes the reader in a parallel world of mythical events and beings that closely echo the themes of life necessary to adulthood. The Hobbit warns of power used for material gain and the horrors of greed and waste but also teaches the value of being true to one's self and friends. That The Hobbit succeeds so transcendently well that the reader barely realizes he or she has been reading a modern parable stands as a testament to the genius of Tolkien and his sheer love of the English language. When Tolkien began writing Lord of the Rings years later the early chapters were of a tone similar to The Hobbit yet, as he progressed, the tone changed to a more adult and complex use of language as the story began to progress. Tolkien fans say that The Hobbit is to be read as a child and Lord of the Rings to be read as an adolescent. I whole-heartedly agree. These books are life as we live it and The Hobbit is an outstanding introduction to the lessons, bitter, enobling, and ultimately wisening, that we must all learn or become but shadows of what we have the potential to be.I'm sure you know there is a wizard, a dragon, eagles, and furry-footed Hobbits, but there are also fearsome monsters, werebears, haughty elves, greedy humans, and even greedier dwarves. Evil in The Hobbit doesn't disappear when dear Mr. Baggins goes home to petty and avaracious relatives thinking him dead and auctioning off his home and household goods. And that is the greatest triumph of the book as I see it. For evil in Tolkien's world is never wholly put away but is instead resisted and overcome with the lessons of life gained in the struggle. All of us have our moments of dread, fear, and temptation. Listen carefully to Tolkien's quiet but enduring message and you will never be alone no matter what life gives you."The Hobbit" isn't just a book you give your children to read, it's a lesson in the labors of life in the adult world.
Title: The Lord of the Rings (50th Anniversary Edition)
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin
Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien
Rating: 5/5
This is simply a stunning edition of this immortal classic. Yes its thick and heavy so it may well not be the easiest edition to read but the time and care put into this edition makes it stand well above other editions. This version of the book I am not afraid to say should be as much a display piece as much as a book to be read everyday because of the high quality. The story as we all know by now is timeless and one each of us can relate to in some way. If you really want an edition worthy of the grand imagery and passionate attention to detail Tolkien put into his work this one is the way to go. Stick to your paperback if you want something easy to read while on the go but if your at home with your kids bring out this handsome edition. Hats off to the publisher. Well done!

I recommend The Hobbit to anyone who enjoys a book you can't put down. You should have at least a 6th grade reading level. It is about a hobbit named Bilbo Bagins who is a normal hobit until one day... An unexpected party shows up with lots of dwarves and a wizard named Gandalf. They go on a mission to find the evil dragon Smaug who has stolen treasure from thier ancestors. They are trying to win it back It is the first book of a series of 4. If you read this book you should read the other three called The Lord of The Rings trilogy. J.R.R. Tolkien has created a real page turner because he keeps the suspense going. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. That is why I recommend The Hobbit.
Title: The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Book 2)
Publisher: Recorded Books
Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien
Rating: 5/5
Tolkien out does the first book of his series The Fellowship of the Ring with his second book The Two Towers. This book could stand on its own without a prequel or a sequel. The level the writing takes on is phenomenal. This book concentrates more on the travels of the other companions in the fellowship than on Frodo. Several mishaps and adventures come about as the Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas track their kidnapped comrades Merry and Pippin. More than a "cult classic", this book serves a deeper purpose; it sheds light on the exploits of humanity. It shows the darkness and the unity man posses within himself. The story picks up with the escape of Frodo and the capture of Merry and Pippin. It includes the return of Gandolf and the battle of the Ents at Isengard. Man begins to unite in the land of Rohan. This portion of the epic ends with the Frodo and Sam nearing Mordor after a near deadly encounter with Shelob and the rest of the Fellowship trying to unite all the lands of men together for battle with Sauron.

One of the best fantasy book ever written in earth. The book pulled on me for several times. I read this book in less than 12 hours. Mr. Tolkien was probably in a mystical mood when he wrote this exciting book. Kids will definitely enjoy this book more than anything else.

I would have to say there is no other book that has repeatedly made an appearance throughout the course of my life than _The Lord_.Even _Alice in Wonderland_, _The Tale of Two Cities_ and other such literary notables fail to take precedence over _The Lord_!It effectively became part of my high school memories as we passed the book about, nearly a cult hit amongst us all.
The joke was on us when we learned how long ago it had been published.I watched as my kids caught the fever and passed the same book about. Now, it is a cinematic celebration and the editions go on and on. It is quite an achievement for a novel to take on such notoriety and I am grateful that I was able to have the opportunity to enjoy the read, as well as the movie.
