J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings)
An absolute terrific series!

I first read this book when I was 14, and immediately fell in love with the characters, plot and landscapes. In some places it is heavy going, but every little detail is important. The story has everything in it - humour, sadness, excitement, mystery and fear. It is a wonderful read, and if I was stranded on a desert island, it would definitely be the one thing I wouldn't live without. The Hobbit is also fab, and I recommend it to anyone trying Tolkein for the first time. Tolkein did an ace job when he wrote both books, and I think the world would be a more boring place without them. Brilliant!!

The Hobbit : The Enchanting Prelude to The Lord of the Rings
An illustrated edition of the fantasy clasic REVIEW

I have several editions of Hobbit. This is just the perfect one, I was looking for introducing my young children to Tolkien. It is a FULLY illustrated editions, With almnost 140 pages of drawings at the style of a comic book but infinitly better done. Rich in color and detail, beautifull emotions on faces and well depicted places, perfect consistency with the book. More than that!!!. It has extracts from the book incredible well chosen, from a narrator point of view ,including dialogs mixed in such a way that there is almost no missing point treated in the original work, so text and reading is not lacking. I have not seen this kind of book in decades, It is one of the proudest books I have in my collection.

The Hobbit is an enthraling adventure

Okay, I think this is the 2nd best book in history! (The best being the lord of the rings). This thing says that you can read the lord of the rings without reading this. Untrue. The person who wrote that is a ben sova. I saw the cartoon movie at 6, and read the book all in 1 day when I was 7. Unbeliviable? I learned to read at the age of 2! The book was so good, I coulnd't stop reading. The book was rather short, compared to my lastest reading at that time: Ivanhoe! 556 pages! Rather good book.

The Hobbit : The Enchanting Prelude to The Lord of the Rings
A classic!

The Hobbit is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings and tells the story of how Bilbo Baggins acquires the ring that becomes the central focus of that trilogy, however it also has its own story to tell. In fact other than Bilbo's encounter with Gollum, this book has little connection to the trilogy that would follow it other than introducing readers to the world of Middle Earth. In fact, it is written in a completely different style. The prose of The Hobbit has more of a fairy tale feel to it than the straight-forward fantasy of The Lord of the Rings. This gives the book a large appeal to children, but it can still be enjoyed by readers of all ages. In The Hobbit, the wizard Gandalf involves Bilbo in an adventure (despite hobbits' aversion to such escapades) with a company of dwarves. They seek to repossess a treasure that is rightfully theirs and is currently in the lair of the dragon Smaug. Along the way, Bilbo and his companions encounter trolls, elves, goblins, giant spiders, and a host of other fantasy story creatures. Bilbo also encounters the strange creature, Gollum, in a diversion from the main story. In this part of the book, readers meet one of the most memorable creatures of all fantasy literature in a fateful encounter that sets the stage for Frodo's later adventures. Of course Gandalf and Bilbo also rank up there among the most recognized characters of fantasy literature as well. The Hobbit gives readers an introduction to Tolkien's world of Middle Earth which is probably one of the best developed worlds in fantasy literature. Every creature in his world is alive, even the plants and the birds. This gives an animated and lively feel to the world that keeps the reader engrossed in the story. Tolkien also does a masterful job of contrasting the feeling of safety and security in places like the shire and Elrond's home with feelings of dread and uneasiness that the reader experiences as Bilbo and his companions venture through such places as the Goblin caves, Mirkwood, and Smaug's lair. This draws the reader into the story and helps them feel like they are experiencing it with the characters.Tolkien only wrote four complete novels about Middle Earth, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also wrote a wealth of background material as well as several short stories about Middle Earth. For the new initiate to Tolkien as well as the young reader, The Hobbit is the place to start. And for those revisiting Middle Earth, The Hobbit reintroduces them to the fantasy world that is as familiar as it is wonderful.

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1)
Sheer genius -- completely supported throughout

I will not belabor the obvious with praises of Tolkien's works. I've read the whole trilogy (and "The Hobbit," of course) over 30 times and love them all more with each reading. Just wanted to say to be sure to read the appendixes -- valuable and insightful (and amusing) additions to the storyline. Frodo Lives!

Lord of the Rings
A terrible abridged version of a great book

I have been a long time fan of the LOTR. Since the movies were released some of my friends wanted to know more about the books, so I checked this set out of the Library thinking it was a good place to start. Sadly I was mistaken from the very begining this recording is a disappointment. The Actors voices are flat and devoid of expression. As a result, the listener gets the impression that the characters treat their task with the same respect that they would place on a Disney movie.
After one disc of waiting for things to get better, I decided to try listening to the battle Of Helms Deep. Here too I found nothing but an endless monotone backed by poor sound effects.
If you are a true Tolkien fan or someone who wants to get the full magic of The Lord of the Rings I recommend the BBC production starring Ian Holm.

There and Back Again

I gave this book 5 stars because that was as many as I could give. If I could give more I would! This is an entertaining, captivating and imaginative book. Tolkein creates a magical world where you feel that anything can happen (which in all truth could)and the characters he makes are both lovable (Bilbo)and despisable (e.g.Smaug). For people who love fantasy, this is the best in that context that I have ever read, save a few other well known books by the same author. I don't believe that anyone has not heard of Tolkien by now, either because of the movie Lord of the Rings or because of his reputable books. In either case, those who have not read this book (and also The Lord of The Rings series, which is a sequel of sorts to The Hobbit)READ IT NOW!!!Don't be among the minority. You won't regret it, I promise.

The Lord of the Rings (Leatherette Collector's Edition)
the Lord of the rings is great

This is unquestionably THE best version of Lord of the Rings for serious fans. It's beautifully bound with golden elvish script embossed on the red leather, and the whole thing creates the feeling that you're reading the actual compilation of Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam. One of the book's most valuable features is it's lack of pictures -- other than diagrams of runes and symbols used upon the door of Moria and such -- allowing the readers to formulate their own imagery. Moreover, this edition is published as the story was meant to be read: with all three "books" in one (many uneducated folk scorned the 2001 movie's unsatisfying ending, which was meant to be merely a cliff-hanger leading into the immediately ensuing chapter). True, the size may render it unwieldy for younger fans (PLEASE take great care), but part of the treasure of this edition is its textile feel and weight, its "sprawl out in front of the fireplace" nature, for this is not a magazine to skim but a treasure trove to ponder and study. It contains a huge fold-out map with comprehensive place-names, as well as family trees and guides for translating the various runic languages. Another great feature is the archive of appendices proffering tidbits on everything from the fall of Numenor to the future of Aragorn and Arwen together, allowing immediate references for every occasion that an item piques your interest. Don't underestimate the value of the index, either, for help in looking up individual songs and riddles or creatures and people. As much as I love reading, this particular book has remained my most cherished posession since its introduction to our family 20 years ago. Together with the Collector's Edition of The Hobbit and BBC's radio broadcast performace on CD, I'm content to share with my family for generations to come the wealth of pleasure to be derived from this greatest of classics.

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Book 2)
Better

This book is better than the first one as all the ground work has been laid and I was familiar and attached to all of the characters by this point. It was really interesting to discover more and learn more of the character Gollum and to meet other creatures and life which wanders Middle Earth. This book was FULL of surprises that I didn't see coming with a wonderful ending that kind of gave me the creeps. I'm about the start the third and final book.
