J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings)
Awesome Book

Are you into fantasy? If you are then, Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Rings) is a good selection for you. The book, Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Rings) was written by J.R.R. Tolkien. I have seen the movie and I have read the book. I would give the book 5 out of 5 stars because Tolkien uses great details in describing the scenes in it, the vast range of different characters, and the history of the Hobbits and middle earth. Some of these things maybe more interesting if you saw the movie first before reading the book.
Tolkien uses great vision to capture my imagination into the book. I will start reading and in minutes I will be absorbed into it. Actually visualizing that I am there with Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Sharing and experiencing there adventures as I read along. It is awesome.
I also love the vast majority of characters he intertangles into the adventures. Like Tom Bombadil, a curious character indeed. Who makes his first appearance in the book when he rescued the 4 hobbits from the a magical tree while they were making there long trek to Rivendell. There are so many crazy characters. I cannot even mention them all.
Another reason why I enjoyed the book a lot is the brief history of the hobbits and middle earth at the beginning of the book before the adventure even began. I enjoyed this part of the book because I actually saw the movie first and I didn't really no much about hobbits or what middle earth really was. So I liked how Tolkien explained a little bit about middle earth and the hobbit history. How the Shire came about. Some history on Bilbo Baggins as well. It helped me understand more.
I would have to recommend reading this book if you enjoyed the movie. There is no doubt in my mind that if you saw the movie you wouldn't like reading this book. I am not a big reader at all. In fact this is the first book I owned. And I am actually planning on reading the rest. So if you like action and a good storyline go out and get this book today.

YOU HAVE NEVER READ UNTIL YOU READ THIS

My aunt read The Hobbit to me when I was a child, and as soon as I could manage The Lord of the Rings, I did. I was nine years old, and it filled me with a sense of wonder that I can barely describe. It is a book which I returned to when my complicated adult life became difficult, and I was able to discover so much that was new in Tolkien's writing, and rediscover a sort of child's wonder as well. Yes, there is much about The Lord of the Rings which might be considered old fashioned, and I see that as clearly as anyone. But I always tell people to look past this to the themes of the book: the importance of community, of friends, of family.

Tolkiens Imagination Gave The World A Fantastic Legacy

These books are a foundation for fantasy a definitive and all to excellent exmaple of the best kind of literature that can come out of society. Even more interesting is to look at these books and be able to recognize where Tolkien got some of his ideas in the past and what it has inspired in the future. Brought to my attention by a close friend and later realized by myself was that Tolkien had gotten many of his concepts from a Golden Age Fantasy writer known as H.P. Lovecraft, those of you that know of H.P. Lovecrafts work would surely disagree, because of H.P. Lovecraft's mostly did works of horror fantasy. H.P. Lovecraft like Tolkien, I belive, became obsessed in the world he was creating and became inundated by it. The similarities are fine and very deep.
What has Tolkien inspired, that list is endless, but one of the better series i have ever read that was undoubtedly inspired by Tolkien is the Dragonlance series written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, these two are as good if not better then what Tolkien wrote, they sweep through a wide spectrum, from love and romance to loss and betrayal.
Tolkien inspired a generation of writers to visit a land they had only rarely glimpsed in Arthurian Romance and works such as Beowulf and The Odyssey. What The Foundation books by Isaac Asimov were to Science Fiction so is Tolkien entire menagerie of his intricate world to the Fantasy genre for all time.

The Lord of the Rings (Leatherette Collector's Edition)
My precious

If your buying this collectors edition, then you've already probably read the LOTR previously. However, if I may, let me put forth my own opinion of Tolkien. I started with "The Hobbit" when I was an 11 year old lad and it really inspired me to make reading a serious hobby. Thousands of books later (many of the fantasy genre), this series still holds up as the most original, beautifully written piece of literature ever created by one man. Even the Bible (for those Christians in the reviewing audience) was written by many men and many parts of the Old Testament were blatant copies of stories included in the mythology of more ancient religions. Any Tolkien fan should have a fine, hardbound edition on his bookshelves to read and to pass on to future generations.

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Book 2)
One of the greatest fictional works ever.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the best fictional works to date. Tolkien was a masterful story teller, one without equal. Whether you like fantasy or not, this book, along with The Fellowship of the Ring, The Return of the King, and of course The Hobbit should be part of anyones library.

There and back again , A hobbit's tale

Tired of all those romance novels? Looking for a book full of adventure? Ready to leap right into the middles of a world full of magaic, danger, wizards, dwarves, elves, trolls, dragons, and little people no taller than three feet? Searching for a book where the hero is the one who appears to be unlikely or unworthy of the title hero? Then the hobbit is the perfect choice to fulfill your reading desires. It is a tale of a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, venturing out into the great big world. He takes risks, makes new life long friendships, and grows more mature and wise on his journey. Just when you things can't get possibily any worse, they do. The book presents a life learning lesson, that life isn't worth living if you don't explore it and get out into the world. In doing so you are setting goals for yourself, you never know what to expect but in the end you are a better person for getting out there. I thought this book was great! I recommend it, if one has the patience and the understanding to read it. It is the book right before The Lord Of The Rings. It introduces some of the characters in the up coming books. Tolkien is an extraordinary author, his words put me right in the story. The images were brought to life through is his words. This book is a must. However, let me warn you that once you get started you're hooked.

Give me a break

If you don't know, this is from way back when the first prints of the book were being made. Although sometimes the letters are thicker than the other font, one can read it perfectly fine. To say this book is worthless because of the rare blot of a letter is just plain idiotic. This is the greatest book ever written, and this version seems to give more of a wholesome feeling while reading it. It is referred in the novel that the final story of the War of the Rings was written in a red book, and so this print was brought forth. It is amazing the sense of despair and feelings of character emotions that flow through anybody who reads this. The places and people have an awkward effect on anybody who reads it. Especially in this print! I think it has made me crazy.

Surprise Adventures

My father bought this book for me when I was eight years old. He began to read some to me every night before I went to sleep. He was frustrated (yet proud) when I couldn't wait for the next night to hear more and began to read it on my own. I have read The Hobbit at least 50 times since then, understanding the story in a different way at each age (I am now 23.) I am just as sucked in by the creatures' adventures as I was when I was young. I have to be in a certain mood to read the rest of the Lord of the Rings series, but I can always read the Hobbit. I am studying to be a teacher and I recently used The Hobbit in a mock lesson demonstrating a teaching strategy to my peers. I would love to use The Hobbit when I have my own class. I think the story is exciting and scary and appeals to elementary and high school students alike. There is much "SAT vocabulary" that I believe ought to be in a person's everyday usage. I was sorely disappointed when my classmates did not understand such words as "repose", "requisite", and "defrayed" which appeared in a short note left to the main character Bilbo. The just of the note was that his friends were thanking him for hospitality and accepting his offer of professional assistance; followed by the terms of the business venture. Anyway, my classmates thought that someone in the story had died because one of the terms was that the business partners would pay for Bilbo's funeral expenses if he died and there was no one to pay for them. Complaining about our present educational level aside, I think this book could be used in many ways; discussions of journeys, how spiders spin webs, are there different levels of stealing? what does it take to make a decision that changes your life completely, as well as everyone else's expectations of you, and more. Most importantly, this book is fun for both teachers and students to read!

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Book 2)
the best choice for recordings

Two members of the fellowship of the ring have passed on in the previous book, and now the fellowship must split further onto paths which will take them far from one another and all of them deeper into dangerous territory. The pitiful creature, Gollum, takes a stronger role in this book, and the true evil which they are up against becomes further revealed in this book. The entire Lord of the Rings series is a wonderfully writen, astounding, adventure tale of friendship, hope and courage in the face of horrible adversity and turmoil.

The Hobbit : The Enchanting Prelude to The Lord of the Rings
Great author and great introduction to Fantasy Genre

I read this book in 3rd grade and liked it. I'm now soon to be in the 12th, and recently reread it for old times' sake. What a disapointment. Tolkien's story telling seriously lacks in dialogue. The plot is also incredibly boring, and unbelievable (i know, i know... it is fantasy), but we can't blame Tolkein for that, seeing as he was one of the first fantasy writers. For the more experienced fantasy/sci-fi reader out there i suggest Orson Scott Card, Samuel Delany, William Gibson, and Ursula Le Guin. The hobbit is an enjoyable fairy tale, but not nearly worthy of the praise it recieves. I only give it 3 stars because Tolkien paved the way for so many others.
