The Hobbit was a great little book, and that's what it is: a little book. If you've read the Hobbit, my god, read the Lord of the Rings series! I guarantee that these books are going to be some of the best you've ever read and/or your favorites! Even if you don't care about fantasy, like me (i'm more of the sci-fi type), read them anyway. The first book, the Fellowship of the Ring, was my favorite of the three. All the action is well timed, and the book provides plenty of cliff-hangers...not to mention the ones in-between the books! All the nine characters (after the fellowship is formed), are so very different and interesting, and I loved how they brought back one of the old dwarves.Basically the whole idea of the books is that Bilbo Baggins, a small kind of man called a hobbit, passes down Gollum's Ring to his nephew, Frodo Baggins, in hopes that he might take it to be destroyed. Bilbo is 111 years old now, and doesn't feel he is up to the task. Gandalf and three other hobbits will accompany him- Merry, Samwise, and Pippin. Merry and Pippin provide comic relief for a while, until they meet Strider, and become pursued by the Ring Wraiths. They are now on a journey to meet the wise Elven King and Queen, who will brief them on their mission, as well as provide others to help them in their quest. The first book takes them through about half of their journey in the lands, while the second will be the other half. The last book takes place in Mordor...their ultimate destination, where Mt Doom is and where salvation from the Dark Lord Sauron.

There is one ring to rule them all, and Frodo happens to have it. It's up to the little Hobbit, and a few friends, to make sure it doesn't and up in the wrong hands. Orks, Wraiths and all sorts of evil obstruct them from taking the ring to Mt. Doom where it can be destroyed. With a little help from Gandlaf, Legolas, Grimli, Merry, Pipin, Sam, Boromir, and Strider they set out on their quest.
"The Lord of the Rings" a is wonderfully written, amazing epic. After reading "The Hobbit", and seeing the movie LOTR I greatly anticipated reading the book. I was definatly not dissapointed, and can't wait to start reading "The Two Towers"(hopefully before the release of the movie!)

This new box set by Houghton Mifflin is a beautiful addition to any Tolkien lovers bookshelf. The illustrations on the box and on the book covers themselves, are done by Alan Lee. One of the best Middle-earth artists, renown for his work on the hardcover editions of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit".In the box you get the cornerstones of Middle-earth, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". In "The Hobbit" you'll go along with Bilbo Baggins, twelve dwarves, and Gandalf the wizard on their quest to recover the dwarves gold and home from the dragon Smaug. A lighthearted and fun journey that sets the stage for what is to come....Which leads us to "The Lord of the Rings", the greatest fantasy epic of all time. Taking place years later than "The Hobbit", this is the story of Frodo Baggins, Samwise, Merry and Pippin and their quest to save Middle-earth from the evil Sauron by destroying the One Ring. Bilbo is seen again and Gandalf is back too, helping the hobbits on their journey. You'll meet a memorable group of characters, who come to life, with the touch of Tolkien. In both books you'll get maps to help you on your way, and in "The Lord of the Rings" there are extensive appendixes with a tale of years, calendars, family trees, notes about language and other good stuff.Overall this one set of books you'll probably end up replacing over the years as you wear them out from reading. You'll smile everytime you open the covers, delving back into Middle-earth, to see old friends and make new ones, in the greatest stories ever told....

I have read "The Lord of the Rings" over 20 times since 1973. I have a Master's degree in English and have read many great works of literature, but nothing else that I have read has woven quite such a spell as Prof. Tolkien's masterpiece. This book will touch your soul. It is a GREAT work of art!

The Two Towers is the second part to the lord of the rings trilogy. The first book was translated to a movie which i saw. I liked the movie so much that couldn't wait for the next movie to come out, and many people told me that the movie was exactly like the book; So i decided to buy the book.
the author tries to give his message to the reader by expressing it through the plot and the theme. Plot and theme is very important in a story and this book is full of it, it is very suspensful has relations to the rennaissance times in europe. In this story is about a series of rings that were given to all of the powerful leaders of the dwarfs, elves, man and one given to the dark lord of mordor. This single ring has the power to control the world but the ring was lost from the lord when he was killed. It rested for thousands of years until it as found again and given to Frodo, the hobbit. He and some key friends were sent to mordor to destroy the ring. The second book starts in the middle of their misson were all has gone wrong. frodo has taken leave with trusty friend Sam, gandalf was believed to be killed, one member of the fellowship has been killed, and two hobbits were taken prisoner. The three remaining members of the fellowship went out to rescue the hobbits where Frodo felt that he had to go alone(with the exception of his friend Sam) because the ring had a seductive power to people of the weak mind and were trying to steal it from him. The hobbits were found and Gandalf ended up not to be dead. They join with allies and build up an army against the traitot wizzard, Saruman. frodo continues his duty as the ring bearer to destroy the ring while he ecounters many obstacles along is way. The ending is too good to be given away, so too bad.

This is book is about the adventure of a hobbit, which is also the before-story of the Lord of the Ring. It was written in a very formal and traditional adventure story style that has heroes, dwarves, elves, fairies and monsters. Besides the wonderful journey in the adventure world what I also learned from this book is that people should take chances and fight for what they believed in.

I had heard about these books from most of my friends and so I decided to pick up the series myself. While the plot is very interesting, the writing style was hard for me to follow. At times I would get bored and at other times it would grab my attention for a while. It took me a year to read the "Fellowship of the Ring." I could never get into it. I would always get to never ending boring parts and put the book down and pick it up again a few weeks later. I had to force myself to finish the series. I had to force myself to read these books and I hate doing that, but these books rarely grabbed my attention. I'm going to try to read them again when I'm older and perhaps I'll think differently.

Tolkien obviously had different intentions when he sat down to write "The Hobbit" than when he began his opus, "The Lord of the Rings" (LOTR). The Hobbit is a fanciful fantasy that reads like an excellent children's story (for older kids to be sure). "The Hobbit," however, does set the table for the engrossing and amazingly influential LOTR. I strongly recommend LOTR for older, first time readers. Tolkien's prose is striking and wonderfully descriptive (without being too wordy - at least through "The Fellowship of the Ring" and the "Two Towers"). The key to the success of this series, however, lies in the development of the main characters. Set in the context of a fantastic and dangerous mission, in an incredibly intricate alternate reality, the story is almost impossible to put down because you care about what happens next to Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and the like. Ultimately, it is a story of honor, sacrifice, and love. A true modern classic.

Most People say that this is a piece of masterwork. No it's not. It is good especially the third book The return of the king. That book contains a masterpiece of excitement and is a 5 star book. The Two towers is very boring. 3 stars. And the first book The fellowship of the ring is good 4 stars. After all the three books togheter gets 4 stars. To warn anybody that thinks the book are funnny. I didn't laugh one time! in the hole three books. So if you think this is as good as Bilbo.Forget it.

I was a young adult before hearing of Tolkien's lure. So when camping in the Chiricahuas of Arizona with my three youngsters, I'd brought The Hobbit for my late-night reading. The kids actually pleaded for a sample, so--with lantern light in a too-small tent under the night-shadow of steep mountainsides--I read them a chapter of Gollum, his "Precious" and Bilbo at the root of their mountain. I'm a pretty good reader-aloud. They were fascinated, terrified, and raptly attentive. They all enjoyed it, but it "took" best on the youngest. A Coast Guard C-130 pilot now, I honestly believe that the quests and adventures and sacrifices J.R.R. Tolkein graced his boy-mind with have led him to join the fellowship he saw as closest to The Ring. I urge parents to introduce children to these brilliant, energetic, fun, fearsome, and ennobling tales.
