The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1)
Just stick with it...

One of the major comments you will hear about this book is that it is a bit slow getting started. But hang in there and get through the set up; its SO worth it! Even the parts of the book characterized as slow are useful; this exposition helps immerse you into Middle Earth, which is one of the more common positive comments you will read about here in the reviews. Reading LOTR is a commitment, treating it like a weekend novel will result in disappointment. But when you are on the edge of your seat as the fog closes in on the hobbits on the Barrow-Downs, or letting the phone ring off the hook, forgotten, as Glorfindel urges his horse to flee with Frodo on its back at the attack of the Ringwraiths at the Ford of Brunien, you will be glad you took the time to do it right. Enjoy!

The Best Novels OF The Twentith Century

I'm not sure how many people saw the movies before reading the books, but I'm one of those people. As soon as I saw the movies,(all three) I knew that I had to read them. They are so good!!! The movies were great in describing them, but, as usual, the books are better. This is a little summary: Though I haven't read all of 'The Hobbit', I know a bit of what happens in that story. Bilbo Baggins, the main charecter, finds the One Ring in the Misty Mountains, and wins it from the creature, Gollum, who has lost, it if I'm correct. Anyway, the first book of 'The Lord Of The Rings' story,(it was made quite clear in the introduction of the first edition that it's not a trilogy) starts with Bilbo celebrating his 'one hundred-elventith' birthday. He's planning to leave the Shire, his home, and go live with the elves in Rivendell, leaving everything behind to his nephew, Frodo, including the One Ring. Now there's a problem, because Bilbo doesn't want to give it up. The Ring kind of binds itself to its owner, if you know what I mean. It's so evil that it's hard to fight off the urge to get rid of it, which is Bilbo's case here. His friend, Gandalf, has to force him a little to leave it behind, and because Bilbo hasn't had it long enough to go crazy after losing it, he feels better once it's gone. But later on Gandalf finds out that Bilbo's magic ring is in fact the One Ring, and he tells Frodo, who now owns it, that he has to destroy it, and the only way to do that is to throw it into the Cracks of Doom in Mordor, the home of the Dark Lord, Sauron, who is now looking for it to take over Middle Earth(isn't that a cool name?). When Frodo starts out, he's joined by his gardener, and friend, Samwise Gamgee, and friends, Pippin Took and Merry Brandybuck. Later on, they meet up with two men, Aragorn and Boromir, an elf, Legolas, and a dwarf, Gimli, who help him on his journey. I don't want to spoil the ending for you, so that you'll read the books yourself. Their something you wouldn't want to overlook.

DEFINITELY NOT A KID'S BOOK

The Hobbit and Lord of the rings books show an incredible consistency of plot and sub-plot. The story flows endlessly from page to page, with suitable breaks in the storyline that allow a person to put it down for such needful things as sleeping and eating, without the usual cliffhangers of other novels. Tending to be riveting at first reading, the second reading reminds one that the series is a good 7000-8000 pages long. A clasic tale of fantasy with all the trimmings, it is a must read for every "well-read" fantasy fan.

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1)
..it's the best????

When one reads reviews of this book, both on this site and all other sources, they will always find that everyone calls it "..the best fastasy novel ever written..", along with other similar accolades. Yet, when one reads *other* fantasy novel reviews, such as Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series, they will also find the same glorious remarks, even though this time they may include something like "..as good as Tolkien..", and a few even dare to say "better" than Tolkien". Well, folks, it's safe to say that if every one of these fantasy authors were asked themselves what they considered was the greatest fantasy work ever written, with no hesitation all would say "Lord of the Rings, of course!" If they didn't, they're kidding themselves. Not many fantasy novels make it on to required reading lists at leading universities. This is One. I've met many people who insisted they hate "fantasy" works, but after they were required to read this, most say something to the account of "..I had no idea it would be like this!", with their jaw dropped in disbelief. Even the most jaded readers who tend not to read fantasy, are completely enthralled. So I'm not going to say "it's the best!", because too many others use that phrase when describing other works. Let's just say that no other fantasy material is better...

The Lord of the Rings (Leatherette Collector's Edition)
The Masterpiece.

I was introduced to the world of Tolkien b a friend, after we were talking about our favorite books by the time. He did mention of Tolkien, and how his Triology had changed his life. (in a sense) I decided to give it a try. I was done with "The Fellowship of the Ring" in four days, finished "The Two Towers" in two and completed "The Return of the King" in five. No wonder I did terrible in school back then, and gave a radical twist to my already intense medievalist ramblings. This is the Holy Book of modern fantasy, from Robert Jordan and Star Wars, to even Squaresoft's Final Fantasy Series, it is all based upon this. Please, read it, you really won't regret doing so. On a side note: I really hate it when some people make fun, either of the book or the people that read it. Now don't take me wrong, I have nothing against the people who have read the story and didn't like it, (you can't please everybody) after all, each head is a universe, and we all have different points of view. Who I don't like, are the ones who go making fun, and have not even read the books, either because they are childish or stupid, or both. Don't fall into that abyss, read them, and make your own unbiased opinion.
