The DVD of the Book

The advent of DVD technology increased what many of us expect to get out of a movie. When I buy a movie I love on DVD, I expect to get as much extra data as possible. I want to see the original drafts of the script, I want to hear the director and writer talking about the movie, I want to see a 'making of' documentary and all the deleted scenes that never made it to the final version. This is *precisley* what you get with this compendium of Christopher Tolkien's History of Middle Earth. Unlike the previous volumes that cover the actual internal history and chronology of Middle Earth in the same way the books of Lost Tales did, this series details the *writing* of the Lord of the Rings. We *see* Tolkien's thought processes as he figured out what happens next. We watch as Aragon shows up with the unlikely name of Trotter. We watch Frodo get moved around so much that, by the time he's recognizable to us as the character in the novel, he's had several names and other characters have had his name!We see the *entire plotline* surrounding Saruman's defection from the Council, one of-if not *the*- major subplots of the novel arise out of Tokien's problems with the Nazgul. If the Nazgul are going to chase Frodo and Co. around on the way to Rivendell, Gandalf *can't be there*. Otherwise he'd just smack the Nazgul around. Ok, where can Gandalf be? Hmm. . .he'd have to be *captured* by someone if he couldn't make it to defend Frodo. And so the entire notion of Saruman takes form. This is more than just a fascinating examination of the development of a famous novel; it's a lesson on how books are written. About the endless series of compromises that must be made to get the story into print. Two points you should consider, though. This is not *fun* to read, it's not remotely entertaining. It's not *meant* as entertainment, it's mean as a scholarly examination of the development of a novel. Christopher Tolkien is occasionally casual; he'll say; "Then father wrote something I honestly can't figure out and doesn't make any sense to me." Fair enough, but that's about as engaging as this gets. If you pick this up, be prepared to read it like a textbook.Secondly, Christopher Tolkien is necessarily bound by the things his father thought were important. Gargantuan volumes of text are devoted to following his father's obsession with working out the precise timeline, often down to the hour and minute, things occurred in the story. I don't think this is going to be interesting to anyone except another Tolkien scholar. I don't think the timeline is that important in the first place, so I can't honestly say that it was interesting watching its development. But you shouldn't let these two things stop you. Some advice; skip the parts that are boring to you. Each book has a hell of an index. Start leafing through it, looking for interesting subjects. I was fascinated by the development of the Palantir. Much time is spent talking about the different drafts, but we don't need to know when the different drafts were written, or why, just that there *were* different drafts. I was able to learn a lot about the development of the Palantir just by reading that section, without understanding the nature of the different drafts of the story. The whole series is filled with this stuff. It's worth it alone for the development of the poem Errantry, which Bilbo recites in the house of Elrond. Great stuff!!

Great Review

frodo lives, yes, but so do the elves though they have gone over sea and shall not be seen again in middle earth until iluvatar's music is played out and the destiny of men is fulfilled. no one can read the trilogy without feeling an emptiness in the chest, like one would at hearing of the extinction of beautiful creatures because they no longer have a place in this world of men. but "much evil indeed must befall the land ere it forgets the elves if once they abode there", and i believe the truth is few finish this work hearts unchanged.

The Lord of the Rings
A Must Read!

Probably the most profound piece of fantasy literature written in the 20th century, J.R.R Tolkien's masterpiece is the foundation of modern fantasy writing. This book is a moving, living account of a world that never was, making Middle Earth so real that one cannot help having the feeling that all else is just a dream. The characters are varied and lively and the scenes portrayed are quite breathtaking, while the action is either fast-paced or profound. Anyone who has ever enjoyed curling up with a good fantasy novel, will not only curl up but eat sleep and breathe with this text.

The Adventure of an Imagination

I first read this book back in 1991 for my 9th grade English class and I have read it several times since. Although I have not read it in the past few years. I was caught up in the hooplah over The Fellowship of the Ring movie. Went to see it, and like many others decided to read the books again, but I couldn't make myself sit down to The Fellowship of The Ring without rereading The Hobbit once again, and once again I was drawn into the land of Middle Earth, and what a breath of fresh air it was. I use to enjoy reading fantasy a great deall, but after a while I grew tired of reading the massive books by Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, and others nd found new interest in Japanese literature and history, but that is beside the point. The Hobbit is a wonderful tale of a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, his 13 Dwarven companions, and Gandalf the wizard. Mr. Baggins ventures far from his comfy home and battles trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and plays riddles with Gollum. He meets elves, Beorn the man who can shift into a bear, and great eagles. Tolkien tells this wonderful story without the gore and sex that glut today's fantasy novels coughs*Terry*Goodkind*coughs. A wonderful story. Also about Tolkien being racist. Is it because the dwarves, elves, and men don't get along. Nextthing you know overweight people will complain because of Bombur the fat dwarf!

THE BOOK THAT CHANGED ME

I read this book at 13. I think it made me a different person.More sensible, more intelligent,it opened my eyes to a new vision of the wordl. It gave me that push to fight the evil inside me as Frodo fought the evil inside the Middle Earth. If I had a son that book would be my gift as soon he could read it.Its more than a book, it's a friend for life, an experience you'll never forget, a journey across life, death, friendship... I don`t understand how they can call this book "fantasy". I cried when Frodo goes away but I was crying also for all the friends I have lost in my life

Gorgeous Edition of a Great Book

I just recieved this edition of the Lord of the Rings as a holiday gift, and am delighted with it. Previously, I had only owned mass market paperback books with covers from the movies, and I'm very excited to have this one.
This is definately the most beautiful book I own. The gilded pages, the shiny designs of the Three Elven Rings and the Eye of Sauron on the cover, the detailed unfolding maps of middle earth...the physical beauty of this book matches the beauty of the words within.
So if you want to own a collector's edition Lord of the Rings, this is a good choice.
Just a word of caution, however. The maps are very delicate, and mine ripped a little in the corner when I was unfolding it.

The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, Book 3)
lord of the rings return of the king

This book seemed much alike the movie. The author wrote the book in a way that made us feel like we were actually there while the story was being told. If you see the movie,
In this book, the sword was put back together and the king was reborn. He was able to find ghosts that the previous king cursed for fleeing from battle and he was able to make a promise to them. He promised that if they fought for him, he would free their souls. So the ghosts took over some orc ships, and pretended to be orcs. When the other orcs came to greet them, the ghosts jumped out and attacked the orcs. With out the ghosts it would not have been a victory.
In the mean time, Frodo was going to throw the ring into the mountain and destroy it. But the ring was calling to him and telling him not to. It was telling him to keep it and he could have all the power that he wanted. But Smeagle stole the ring from Frodo and fell into the lava. That was the end of the ring, after this everything was restored and every one was happy. The throne was given back to the rightful person and the hobbits went back to the shire.
But, gandalf goes back to the Shire and Brings frodo on another journey that takes you on another adventure. So another serise continues...

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Book 2)
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like all J.R.R.Tolkin's books I found this to be a great read. He seems to be able to draw the reader right into the story. His characters have a lot of depth and you can feel their pains, joys and triumphs. Middle Earth is a land just over the next horizon and Tolkin makes it so believe that you can smell the evil of Mordor or hear Shelob as she moves among rock. Read this and the other two books in 'The Lord of The Rings'series I highly recommend them.
