J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings)
Six stars

The only reason you maybe shouldn't read Tolkien is that any other books by any other authors will never again be good enough. But it's worth it. The road on which you step by opening The Hobbit is a magical and breathtaking road which will lead you into a unforgetable, strange and beautiful new world, changing your life forever. I'd give it six stars if I could. I simply feel sorry for people who don't like Tolkien (if such people exist).

The Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide
Super

This is an eerie thing! :-) I have loved these books all my life, and have always wanted to see a good movie made from them. And now, it has been done. And the more I see about this movie, the more I want to see! This "official guide" carries the details to a higher level, encapsulating a lot of stuff that has been spread out over various web-sites. The pictures are wonderful, and the suspicion grows that these films may actually change film history forever.I will also add that, for those who delight in destroying things of beauty, these films will poise a valuable and long-lasting counterweight. MOST people enjoy creating things of beauty, and hundreds or thousands of people slaved for years to create these films.I wonder if some countries will decide that these films must be censored. :-0

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1)
Overall good job

This is the only way you can get the unabridged version in audio format right now. That in itself makes this a worthwhile purchase. Rob Inglis is a good, but not great reader. He has a rich voice, but doesn't have the expressiveness and vocal changes by character you find with the reader on the Harry Potter audio formats. Truthfully his reading makes it difficult to pay attention some times. You may find yourself wandering off mentally. He does do an excellent Gollum, though. It's nice soothing listening while you are driving in your car.

The Hobbit : The Enchanting Prelude to The Lord of the Rings
My first try at fantasy with "The Hobbit"

I recently read the "Hobbit" so that I could then move onto "The Lord of the Rings" and then go see "The Lord of the Rings" movies.I have never read Fantasy books before so this was my first one, and I have to say that Fantasy takes some getting used to.While I enjoyed "The Hobbit", I did find some parts of it slow and uninteresting. I decided that Fantasy is probably not my favorite genre, however, the the book was still good and I would recommend it."The Hobbit" tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, along with Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves taking a journey to try and reclaim treasure taken from the dwarves ancestors by an evil dragon. For someone used to reading books grounded closer to reality, the plot of this book may sound kind of funny. But after you read about the experiances of this group of adventurers, you will have to agree it is quite a fun story.

The Hobbit : The Enchanting Prelude to The Lord of the Rings
*Quality* personified

I only recently (Today in fact) recieved this book, and I had no doubts in my mind as to whether it was worth the expense to have it shipped here (I am located in the republic Ireland). I could have simply gone to my local Easons (pretty much *the* only bookstore, of note, in Ireland) and picked up one of the many (and I'm talking millions here) paperback editions of "The Hobbit" (or The Lord of the Rings, as I bought both leatherette editions), but instead I chose the leatherette edition, and I'm not sorry, not in the least!I'll start by describing the 'externals' (or asthestics) of the book: Let me first say, dont be fooled into believing this is some 'form' of leather that the book is bound in, it is, in fact (or at least appears to be), a form of plastic. Saying this, however, it does not cheapen the book, I'm saying merely to clarify. This 'plastic' is actually made to look 100% like real leather, if only for the feel, you would be fooled into thinking it was leather (leather is less resitant, scratches more easily and is softer under-hand). I personally dont mind, the book is most beautifully crafted with 'simulation' gold gild (more than likely its a gold ink or paint). The pages themselves are of good, rather great -quality, not cheap 'bright-white' 'mass market' pages, but rather a subtle shade of mild yellow, not to mention the pages being almost twice as thick as paperback editions (if not, in fact thicker), which makes for a much more comfortable read. I have only one 'gripe' or 'probleme' with this book, and that is that the text that is printed on the pages seems to be at an angle (rather than being 90deg to the pages edge, the text seems to be off by about 3-5 degrees). This is only a slight annoyance, and I am not totally convinced that it is either an error while printing nor that all copies have the same 'condition'; I personally dont mind too much, but for the 'perfectionistic reader' it can be quite distracting, but to be honest that is the fault of the reader rather than the book's.Finally (and perhaps most importantly?),
The book comes with a 'container' wich is, also, bound with 'leatherette', they both complement each other and the cover is a perfect protector against the day to day 'wear n tear' of life.Personally, I cant put the book down. I'm three chapters through and cant find fault in the book. All of this goes for the "Lord of the rings - Leatherette edition" just as much as for "The Hobbit - Leatherette edition".This book is a must for all!

Special Note on CD version

This is truly a wonderful story , But I was unsure of getting the cd over the audio tapes. I noticed that the tapes had the Unabridged version and the Cd version did not say if it was or not on all parts, so i took a chance and got the Cd version of each book. Thankfully the Cd version Is also Unabridged. So for those of you out there like me who might have been confused between the tapes and the Cd now you know they are the same.

bad books

Having read the books several years ago,I purchased the set hoping my daughter would be interested. Well the movies have created the interest for her . She has read the first three and is a bit hesitant to read the last one. She thinks seeing the movie first might be better. I thought reading the books first was better.I highly recomend it for the younger set that have seen the movies and especially for those that haven't.

Finding God in the Lord of the Rings
"god in LOTR?" Which one?

This is an incredibly disappointing "work." Any true reader of Tolkien will marvel at the shallowness of this critique of his trilogy. I wonder if the authors did any more than peruse the book or, at best, speed-read through it to write this drivel. God is indeed present in Tolkien's work but this book is no road map to finding Him there. Far superior is "The Gospel Acording to Tolkien" by Ralph C. Wood. I would also suggest that serious readers pick up the Tolkien's "Silmarillion" in which God's act of creation literally leaps off the first page. Bruner and Ware would also do well to read this to deepen their own knowledge.

what's the deal

I am the only girl I know that has read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. But who cares? I began reading the books by trying to find out who wrote Hobbit. Then I began to read it and I loved it! I have just finished the first book and it was cool. I liked the part when the cave troll and the orcs came. That was scary! If you read Harry Potter then you like this collection. They are alot alike. Frodo and Harry are both unlikely heroes. I swear if like Harry Potter or any other type of fansty you'll love these books! These can make you scared(the orcs,Golleum) or happy and joyful. Kids if your parents read these when were little, then I suggest you read them, too. That's what got me to read them.

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1)
Puzzling, good at parts not at others.

The book and current film have some similarities, however, when dealing with the book one faces oddities:Where does the epic begin and the children's tale end?One can see Tolkien's style changing as the book goes on.The 'songs' (chants?) are somewhat offputting. I was unsure of what to make of them.As far as the Tom Bombadil character: What is his purpose? Is he symbolizing something or an error in the plot?A long work, yes? The films are visually extraordinary, but I wonder if NOT reading the books puts one at a disadvantage when seeing them (the films)."The Shadow of the Past" chapter is probably the best in this first book of the trilogy inasmuch as it explains a great deal of background.Personally I prefer the third book "Return of the King".
