Title: The Hobbit : The Enchanting Prelude to The Lord of the Rings
Publisher: Del Rey
Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien
Rating: 5/5
Hobbits are little creatures, only about half your height. They have no need for shoes, because lots of hair grow on their little feet and leathery soles, and they can creep around very quietly without a noise. One particular hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, is an ordinary hobbit that lives in a large hobbit-hole in The Hill, and never thought he would have an adventure or wanted one until one beautifully sunny day in April. On this day, while sitting outside, there stood the great wizard, Gandalf! They planned tea for the next day, and before poor Bilbo knew it, there were thirteen dwarfs (not including Gandalf and Bilbo)! Bilbo was so surprised and busy (preparing more tea and food for the dwarfs) that he did not remember that it was his fiftieth birthday the next day. On the day of his birthday, Gandalf and the dwarfs, Dwalin, Balin, Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bomber, and Thorin, took him on a quest to retrieve the treasure that the evil dragon, Smaug had stolen. It was a very hard trip there, with little and sometimes no food, lots of horrible situations and enemies including some giant spiders, goblins, wolves, and trolls. In one occurrence, Bilbo finds a golden rings and figures out that it can make him invisible and he uses it to try to escape from many bad situations.
This magical fantasy masterpiece is sure to capture your heart and live in your imagination forever.

This whole series, has, by far, proven to be the best that I have ever read. It is a vast epic of sweeping proportions and implications. Tolkien is a genius when it comes to portraying a character's emotions, and the storyline is first - rate. Anyone that enjoyed The Hobbit will definitely like these books.

Tolkien creates a world and breathes so much life in it. These three books can not be separated. They are a trio. So much of the story is built in its characters and the plot is interesting. The main player Frodo has to take the One Ring and throw it into the pits of Mount Doom. Seems easy enough right. Oh yeah don't forget that Ringwraiths are after it, everyone who comes into contact with the ring wants to use it to control Middle Earth, you get separated from your best friend, a crazy split personality helps guide you along the way, and that Sauraman and Sauron are both trying to find you. A great story that weaves so much action and interesting characters (Gimli, Merry, Aragorn, Pippin, Treebeard, Gollum, Gandalf, Sauraman, Theoden, Samwise, and Legolas) together without missing a beat. These books are just plain awesome.

OK-first I've got to confess that I avoided "Ring" geeks in high school-they were way too passionate (zealots?). Over the years, I've resisted and when I finally read and loved "The Hobbit" I decided to read "Fellowship" a year ago. Since then I put it down twice, getting bogged down in the lengthy history of Middle Earth that precedes the actual story. Once I decided to skip it altogether, things built speed rapidly and I ended up really enjoying the book. Since many will consider reading this based on seeing the film, I'll add that I saw the movie and was blown away by how well the filmmakers told the story, leaving out the parts that are nice but superfluous, and keeping the core intact. That said, the book makes more clear the monumental task of gathering opposing forces against a common enemy and shows why the choices characters make (the elf-queen, for instance) are not as simple as they appear in the film.I also realized how thoroughly George Lucas "borrowed" from "Rings" in the first 3 Star Wars movies...

I have no idea how many times I've read this trilogy. Certainly over 30. I have also read almost every other fantasy which has achieved any sort of popularity, and nothing really comes close. (Well, Guy Gavriel Kay and Orson Scott Card, maybe, and George R. R. Martin's new series is shaping up to be very special - but I digress!) What makes it so re-readable, aside from the unparalleled level of world-building and a story arc that defined modern fantasy pretty well single-handedly, is the WRITING. Tolkien's love for and mastery of the English language makes LOTR a true work of literature in the best sense of the word. Every detail of the plot has long since burned itself into my brain, but the sheer pleasure I take from letting the words flow by ensures that I will be reading these books forever. There are a lot of great plot-spinners out there these days (Eddings, Donaldson, Robert Jordan in particular is taking that to new heights - or depths), but I only read those books to find out what happens next. Their use of the language rarely (and in some cases never) rises above mere competence. None of them could have turned me into a voracious life-long reader the way Tolkien did. If you think the complexity of the language is going to be a barrier, there's lots of other terrific British fantasy you can cut your teeth on. C.S. Lewis, Joan Aiken, Susan Cooper, Alan Garner and of course J. K. Rowling are just a few. You have to be ready for this book (which might be considered a criticism these days), but if you are it will be a unique and life-changing experience. I hope all that wasn't too over the top...

The Hobbit is one of those novels that I have been saying I should read for a long time. I admit, I tried starting it a couple of times in high school, but just couldn't get past the first few pages. Fantasy fiction is not really my thing, however, now that I have finally gotten around to reading The Hobbit (many years after high school) I enjoyed it. The Hobbit is a well written, engaging, and oftentimes humorous work of fantasy. It is aimed at a youthful audience and I think it would be a marvelous next step for young people who have gotten through Harry Potter and long for more. If you've been saying you should read this one, just pick it up, there's no sense waiting anymore.Enjoy.

This is a great story! I really enjoyed reading it. Sometimes Tolkien's overly descriptive writing style is hard to get through, but the dialog and interaction between the characters makes this a must read. I recommend it highly.

Before Robert Jordan conceived his Wheel of Time, or Harry Potter entered his first Quidditch Match, there was "The Hobbit." This charming and magical fantasy is the simple story of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who begins the adventure of a lifetime accompanying a group of dwarves. Their destination is the Lonely Mountain, in which lies the dwarves stolen fortune, guarded by a horrible dragon named Smaug. How easy is was to lose yourself in this world for awhile. I kept thinking about it every time I put the book down. It also wonderfully sets up the Lord of the Rings trilogy that includes two of the characters from "The Hobbit." If you've never read this book like I hadn't, and are a big fan of either Harry Potter or the Robert Jordan books, you owe it to yourself to read this. It's great!
