The Magical Worlds of Lord of the Rings : The Amazing Myths, Legends and Facts Behind the Masterpiece
Wow!

Just an average reader who loved the Lord of the Rings and then found this little wonder which explained and clarified lots of things I found confusing in Tolkien. It worked so well I went back and re-read Rings again, this time thoroughly enjoying and understanding everything. Highly recommended for both the curious as well as those who want to know more in a fun and interesting way.

Wordy...

I just thought that this trilogy overly comsumed by words. it was a novel that could have been about three-hundred pages shorter in mimd. I finished the book, out of determation and interest in it, but found that At times I didn't think I'd ever get through it... the movies were the thing that made me most interested in finally reading it, outside of four years of three of my best friends Raving almost daily for their love of this book. I guess that fanasy isn't my thing, although I do get into it, I just like more the ainti- hero Novels more. All in all, it was a good book, wordy yes, but I can't take anything away from it's statius as a classic.

Finding God in the Lord of the Rings
Skimming the Surface.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote THE LORD OF THE RINGS because he wanted to write a good story. That's a huge generalization, but it's true. Now, Tolkien said time and again that THE LORD OF THE RINGS was not an allegory of any kind, but he never denied that his beliefs and values played a part in the saga's creation. Tolkien was a devout Christian (Catholic in denomination) and his faith was very real and was the essence of who he was. Therefore, though THE LORD OF THE RINGS is not an allegory, it is full of Christian images and ideals.FINDING GOD IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS attempts to illuminate some of those Christian values found in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Unfortunately, the book never dives far enough into Tolkien's writing. There are many images, characters, and events that the author's could have examined concerning the Christian faith, but didn't. It's also really short, I read the whole book in about an hour. Therefore, it works best as a devotional for any Tolkien fan. It also works well as an introduction for any parent or other adult concerned about the goodness of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1)
An exciting beginning

_The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring_ is an amazing adventure story of four friends and many allies who journey great distances as an attempt to preserve all life from evil forces. The main character, Frodo Baggins, exhibits outstanding courage and bears the burden of the ring, which gives its user awesome power. The ring also easily corrupts the mind of all its users. Frodo and his life long best friend Sam are determined to stick together no matter what danger they encounter. It is an excellent display of friendship, and although this is a fictional novel, the qualities exhibited by each and every character make readers feel as if the story is real and they are actually in the setting of the story.
Some may say that the first part of the _Lord of the Rings_ trilogy is slow and boring, but I believe the books serves a very important purpose and sets up what is yet to come in this exciting series by J.R.R. Tolkien. _The Fellowship of the Ring_ is by far one of Tolkien's best works of literature, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading fictional adventure stories. The Hobbit : The Enchanting Prelude to The Lord of the Rings
Great fun and fulfillment

As a child, reading this book was a true pleasure.
I can vividly recall the simple pleasures of Bilbo's life, how he liked his food and warmth. I can see even now how his world got turned upside down and what amazing adventures awaited him. He was the quintessential reluctant hero, who delivered grandly in the darkest hours. What an amazing story!
What really tickled me later was to realize all the minor ways and passages that Tolkien created in this masterpiece were but gates that lead to entire worlds. Each of those little plot offshoots would yield millenia of history, entire sagas, in the later books.
Back then who would have known, least of all I, how far and wide the world was. I don't think Tolkien himself knew, and the biographer's may agree with me.
The Hobbit is forever enshrined as a classic children's book, but to me it carries a greater significance. It is essential reading to be weaned into the stupendous world Tolkien created, to journey through the agonies and bliss of The Lord of the Rings, and finally to flood the senses and overload the emotions in Silmarillion.
But to begin the voyage, one must read the Hobbit.
To not complete the voyage, one must forever wonder, to what depths and heights of genius did Tolkien's mind travel?

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, Book 2)
Powerful, enchanting and groundbreaking!

?The Two Towers' takes over, where TFotR ended. J.R.R. Tolkien takes us once again back to Middle-Earth, his fairy world populated with unique forms of life and filled with ancient myths. And amidst this enchanting setting, we accompany our merry band of Hobbits on their exciting adventures that carry them to places far beyond their and the readers imagination. After the fellowship broke apart at the waterfalls of Rauros, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas set out to rescue the two young Hobbits, Merry and Pippin, who had been captured by orcs to be brought to the traitor wizard Saruman. The chase itself is as fast paced as the second part of Tolkien's first book had been since the departure from Elrond's home. The events that unfold around the three hunters culminate in a furious battle at Helm's Deep where the riders of Rohan clash with Saruman's mighty forces. These chapters possibly form the most intense string of chapters of the whole LotR trilogy. In contrast to the classical epic fantasy style of the first part, the second part of TTT focuses on the journey of Frodo and his faithful companion Sam to Mount Doom, the mighty fortress of evil Sauron. While the first part of TTT is filled with strife and warfare, the second part is also a journey to the true meaning of friendship, trust, betrayal and courage. Frodo and Sam find assistance when they least expect it by the hands of Faramir, brother to late Boromir, who succeeds in uncovering Frodo's secret task, but rather gives the weary Hobbits hope than despair as he resists the temptation to take the one ring from Frodo when he has the chance to do that. And they experience betrayal at the hands of Gollum, who first brings them closer to their final destination, but eventually leads them into a fatal trap. But it's the courage of dear Sam, who prevails when things appear to have been lost and evil is just one final step from victory...And that's probably the key to 'The Two Towers'. Where TFotR focussed on the adventures of a group of heroes set out to defend good from evil, TTT teaches us about friendship and faith, all spiced up by exciting battles and mysterious riddles. That's what makes Tolkien's epic so unique, as it is more than just a string of adventures in a world of fantasy and magic.

The Lord of the Rings (BBC Dramatization)
The best

Ignore those who give less than 5 stars - they need help. This is an excellent production that plumbs the depths of emotion in the same way that the book does, stiring in your imagination the story that is often thought of as the No. 1 of the last century. A hard task to ask of a radio production, but one that is completed with inspired performances. This is what I felt at 16 when I first heard the production in the early 80s. Nothing has changed. The new film is said to be excellent and long at 3 hours, and this audio production is also long at 13 hours, but necessarily so to illustrate the depth of the story. The best.

J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings)
The Greatest Book of the 20th Century?

The Lord of the Rings, with The Hobbit as recommended introductory reading, must surely rank as the book of the century. It is timeless in conception and with the full range of human emotions generated in a text that captivates from beginning to end. What other book has produced as many 5 star reviews? Ideal for all ages and a book that will be re-read for many years. A masterful piece of true fiction and my only surprise is that it did not result in a Nobel Prize.
